A yellow school bus collided with a car in Queens on Tuesday morning causing the bus to crash into a light pole. According to a report by the New York Daily News, the accident occurred on 167th St. and 73rd Ave. in Fresh Meadows at about 8:10 a.m.,

Among the 11 people hospitalized, more than half were teenagers. The injuries were reported to range from minor to serious, with none being considered life-threatening

Individuals who have suffered an injury in a bus accident may be able to file a lawsuit against the bus company. In and of itself, however, an injury in a bus accident is not grounds for a lawsuit. In order to have a valid lawsuit the victim must be able to prove that either the bus driver or company acted negligently. For instance, if the accident was the result of a road defect, the victims do not have grounds for a lawsuit against the bus company. Furthermore, victims of bus accidents must be able to prove that the injuries suffered in the crash caused either economic or non-economic damages. Economic damages are any financial strain the victim suffered. Non-economic damages are any pain and suffering caused by the crash.

Individuals, who have suffered an injury in an accident with a city bus or a private bus, may have a difficult time proving liability. The bus companies will undoubtedly have attorneys working hard to protect their interests after an accident. As a result, it is important that victims hire a lawyer who has experience handling bus accident lawsuits. An experienced lawyer will thoroughly investigate the accident by taking photos of the scene, reviewing police reports, and interviewing witnesses. Additionally, an attorney will handle all aspects of the legal proceedings, including the filing of the lawsuit, representing victims at trial, handling mediation when necessary, and pursuing maximum compensation for their clients’ losses.
