The Taxi and Limousine Commission reports more than 400 million riders per year. For comparison, the entire population of the United States is estimated at about 300 million.

In a study conducted in 2000, the New York City cab industry logged more than 13,000 consumer complaints - or nearly 36 complaints a day.
