The IVC (Inferior Vena Cava) is a major vein in the human body which transports blood from the lower body to the heart. Retrievable IVC Filters are cage-like, spider-shaped wire devices purportedly designed to protect patients who are at a high risk of pulmonary embolism (a PE is a condition whereby one or more of the arteries in the lungs becomes blocked by a blood clot) or deep vein thrombosis (DVT), and thus to catch blood clots in the filter to prevent such clots from going to the heart, lungs, or brain. The IVC filter is and was supposed to work by catching the clots while still in the bloodstream, and then allowing the clots to break down over the course of time. However, many of these filters caused more damage than they prevented.
