A single-vehicle accident in Midtown Manhattan early Tuesday morning resulted in the death of the passenger and injuries to the driver. According to a report by CBS New York, the accident occurred on 6th Avenue and 54th Street. A witness said that the car was traveling at a high rate of speed and attempted to stop for a red light. The car then went out of control and struck a fire hydrant.

A single-vehicle accident such as this raises significant legal questions for an experienced New York Car accident attorney. Among the first questions to be answered would be about the relationship between the passenger and the driver which could impact any number of liability and insurance issues. Another question that immediately jumps to mind is whether seat belts or other safety devices were working properly and being utilized. A third question would be whether there were any drugs or alcohol involved. A fourth question would be if any other vehicles or other parties are responsible for this tragedy. Finally, an experienced New York personal injury attorney would want to know if the deceased passenger was survived by family and the nature of the familial relationship of those family members. Of course, this is not a complete list of questions that need investigation, but is representative of the types of questions an experienced attorney thinks about.

Many of these questions, particularly certain insurance information, will be available in the Police Report. In New York City, serious accidents are investigated by the NYPD Collision Investigation Squad. This unit conducts extremely thorough and detailed investigations of serious accidents such as the one above. Experienced New York Car Accident lawyers are aware of how to obtain and use the details contained in these investigative reports.
