Motorcycle accidents on the rise in New York and across the country

While the total number of people killed in all types of motor vehicle accidents dropped to 37,261 in 2008, motorcycle deaths across the country increased for the 11th straight year and now account for about 1 in every 7 deaths, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety administration.

Nationwide, 5,290 people were killed on their motorcycles in 2008, compared to 5,174 in 2007. Another 100,000 were injured.

In the State of New York, the number of motorcycle deaths has increased from 150 five years ago to 184 in 2008 and more than 5,000 were seriously injured, according to the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles. Meanwhile, the number of registered motorcycle in New York has almost doubled - from 170,148 in 2004 to more than 315,000 today.

Of the top causes of the 5,000 reported motorcycle accidents, almost 1,000 were caused by a car or other vehicle pulling into the path of a motorcycle rider.
