Erb's Palsy, also called Brachial Palsy, is a weakness or loss of movement to the arm caused by damage to the Brachial Plexus, a bundle of nerves in the shoulder.

Erb's Palsy can occur during difficult deliveries due to excessive pulling on the shoulder or arms, or in cases where the infant's head is pulled toward the side as the shoulders pass through the birth canal, according to the National Institutes of Health.

This type of injury can often be avoided by alert and experienced medical staff. At Queller, Fisher, Washor, Fuchs & Kool, our New York Erb's Palsy lawyers and birth injury attorneys are experienced in helping parents deal with an Erb's Palsy injury to a newborn child, which can require nerve and tendon surgeries and in some cases can result in long-term weakness to the affected limb.

Birthing large infants and breech deliveries are known to increase the risk of Erb's Palsy. Cesarean deliveries can be indicated for at-risk infants and have reduced the instances of Erb's Palsy.

The injury can take several forms in newborns:

  • Brachial plexus injuries usually impact only the upper part of the arm.
  • Erb's affects both the upper and lower arm.
  • Klumpke paralysis impacts the hand and can also be characterized by a drooping eyelid on the infant's opposite side.

Erb's Palsy can require surgery to restore nerve damage and tendon transfers to compensate for nerves that are not functioning properly.
